Considering the technology and sophistication of the modern world, you might think there would be extensive photo records of Sperm whales. In reality, the photo records are surprisingly sparse - when you strip out the line drawings and clip art from the Google image search, it only delivers 48 pages and much of that features t-shirts, illustrations, misidentified species, teeth, Sea World killer whales, tails, skeletal components, water spouts, jewelry, museum interiors, and various way-off-the-mark unrelated images. Maybe half the pages show an actual Sperm Whale, full body, under the water. Of those, many are taken from the same outing, by less than a half dozen photographers. And then, when you study those relevant images, you find that these whales are like any family – they are not very generically similar. Each one has similar characteristics, but each one is also very different from the other – some with longer, flatter snouts, flippers that are rounded or more angular, eyes that are positioned differently in relation to the mouth, true coloration often difficult to pin down. In other words we may know more about Sperm Whales today than 100 years ago, but not as much as you might think.
