It's the habit of architectural training that you see do not things as they are, but what lies beneath them--what is the skeleton that holds building parts together, how would the building appear if it were sliced in two here or there. Where others see outward form, the architect senses inward structure. "Sections," as they are called in the profession, reveal more about the inner workings and specific characteristics of the building where the section is taken. Maybe it's the eroded quality, but I have always wanted to see "what remains," what is the leftover essence of what once fully blossomed in complexity, detail and carefully orchestrated schemes of color. My interest in not simply in the outward form, but what is usually unseen--the layers of 'tween decks, the skeletal ribbing of the hull, and the interior mechanical workings. If it all becomes exposed in a final wreck.so much the better.
