Empire

**SOLD**

45” x 21 x 8”

The Empire was a passenger steamer operating on the Hudson River in the 1830’s and 40’s. There is very little history of the Empire’s beginnings, or its demise. As you get to know a two-dimensional artists’ work, you begin to get a sense of their “marks”—that is, characteristic strokes or flourishes that they use to form their images. I think if you asked them, and this was a recognizable concept to them, they would note that they enjoyed making their “marks” in whatever particular fashion they employ. Shaping and using wood in different ways is my mark. The color (or lack of it), the density, the erosion, the resistance and density of woods, the porous qualities, long short, stubby, fractured, layered, stained, broken, old, scratched, painted and repainted—I trade in these processes and they never become old. The Empire is as much about the materials for me as the subject matter.
