Postcards are often the only record of many ships or boats. This one, the Lola, is from a 1908 postcard, bearing a green One Cent stamp with a portrait of Ben Franklin. The Lola operated on the Illinois River in the vicinity of a local resort, The Starved Rock Hotel. The Lola's captain, Seth Ballard, also built a hotel on an island in the river. Visitors rang a bell at the landing, and the Lola toured passengers about Ottawa, Utica, La Salle, and Peru, Illinois.
