RMS Mauretania, sister ship of the Lusitania, was an ocean liner built by at Wallsend (Wallsend derives its name as the location of the end of Hadrian's Wall), Tyne and Wear, England and was launched on September 20, 1906. The Mauretania’s career was similar to many other liners from the period—setting speed records for Atlantic crossings (the British displacing the great German liners of the 1890’s), serving as troop and hospital ships during the First World War, re-visiting glory in the 1920’s, becoming outmoded by the 1930’s (the German’s regaining speed records), and eventually ending in scrap yards. Total life span of the Mauretania: 29 years.
