The penguins have carried a conversation on and off with me since I first was inspired to address them after looking again at an 1854 Currier and Ives print, The Red Jacket, where they gathered together to witness the entrance of a Yankee Clipper into an Antarctic harbor.
The artistic process is, I think, often one of tuning in crackly am/fm radio waves that contain small snippets of information or direction. But, like a Greek Oracle, the wisdom is often unclear. Still, since the artist seeks an authenticity in the process, these distant voices—when they make themselves known—take on an added importance. This is what I call the “conversation.” Frequently, it is really a one-sided affair, where I might ask a few questions, without necessarily being given an answer—but, more often, it is really a matter of simply keeping the scratchy radio on and listening for something intelligible to come out of it.
In this case, what I am hearing is that the Penguin is looking for home.
