FERGUSON, Albert E., CMMA (Chief Machinist’s Mate)
There are many interesting stories surrounding the USS Indianapolis, sunk on July 30, 1945 by the Japanese submarine, I-58 in the very, very late days of the Pacific War. Part of the story is this: the Indianapolis had been on a secret mission, having just delivered atomic bomb components to Tinian. Due to various controversial communication errors and secrecy, the disappearance of the ship went unnoticed for four days. 300 men were killed in the initial attack, 880 went into the water. Due to lack of food, water, exposure to the elements, and shark attacks, only 317 men had survived when a PBY seaplane sighted them.
Among the survivors was Albert Ferguson; his son came and asked me to make this last year.
