As a visual artist, one spends more time looking at things than reading about things. Looking at things—it’s like food, and three large helpings a day, including desert, is never really enough. But there are also phrases or key words that catch my eye. Depending on the content, they become just as memorable as a picture, as suggestive, and will drive me to create in space what is suggested by words. When I was reading through this book, I was immediately hooked by this simple sentence: “Little is known about the Josephine and Edith other than that the rivers pictured are probably either the Snohomish, Skagit, or Nooksak.” |
