A quick tour of the Kronprinz Wilhelm, 1901-1923a deluxe suite in 1901 cost $2,000.00.

  • 1,761 total passengers, 1,054 3rd Class.
  • 3rd Class to USA, $10.00.
  • the 4-funnel Deutschland held Atlantic speed record, but vibrated badly; 4-funnels in Kronprinz but smaller engines, company no longer interested in speed records.
  • 1902, ran over and sunk the cargo ship Robert Ingham.
  • July 8th 1907, in position 42° 50' N – 50° 31' W, hit iceberg, sustained minor damage.
  • WWI declared, ship leaves Hoboken NJ, German navel crew transferred at sea, outfitted with two 80mm guns.
  • captures British steamer Indian Prince loaded with cocoa, coffee, sinks her.
  • as raids continue, all prisoner-of-war passengers are kept in 1st class, enemy crews are kept in 2nd class accommodations.  She captures 14 ships.
  • to avoid stopping in ports, captures ships with coal.
  • after 8 months at sea, crew suffers from beriberi.
  • Sails into neutral USA, interned for two years at Newport News, VA.
  • 1917, renamed USS Von Steuben (after a German mercenary who helped bring discipline to America’s Continental Army during the American Revolution) and entered US troopship service.
