English River steamers on the Thames enjoyed a golden period towards the end of the 19th century. Companies such as the Glasgow & Inverary Steamboat Company, River Thames Steamboat Company, Victoria Steamboat Association, Belle Steamers, General Steam Navigation, and Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company built and put into service a large flotilla of passenger steamers. Each paddle steamer brought a refinement of standards, and a new level of success and sensation. The Royal Sovereign was one among a group that included the Glen Rosa, Koh-I-Noor, and St. Tudno. The improvements eclipsed older steamers delivering passengers on the Thames, and were not surpassed for many years. They operated from the Old Swan Pier in central London, sailing to Southend and Essex and resorts in Kent. Their heyday took them through the period of The Great War, but after 1918, most were gradually sold, scrapped, and replaced.
