All I know of the steam yacht Stranger is based on a painting by 19th century artist Elisha Taylor Baker (American 1827-1890). The oil on canvas shows a handsome vessel briskly moving through choppy waters and trailing US colors. Although we artists seem bound by visions, we can be as influenced by words. A yacht of this name, sailing through a dark and restless sea, is all I really needed to carry me through the work. It sums up to me the mysteries of those who venture out on the sea, and the evocative qualities they embody as their craft slips over the line of the horizon and disappears. |
